On January 27, 2008, the United Nations Postal Administration and Israel Post issued commemorative stamps on the theme “Remembrance and Beyond”. The stamp demonstrates the commitment of the United Nations to pay tribute to all the victims of the Holocaust, honour the survivors, and reaffirms its efforts to help prevent future acts of genocide.
In November of 2005, the United Nations officially rejected any denial of the Holocaust as a historical event, either in full or in part, by adopting a new resolution. That resolution condemns the horrible sins of the Holocaust, and also condemns any manifestation of hate or intolerance that could lead to violence against people in today’s world.
As a result of the resolution, January 27th, the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp, was designated as an annual International Day of Commemoration to honor the victims and the survivors of the Holocaust. The significance of resolution is that it calls for a remembrance of past crimes with an eye towards preventing them in the future.
On January 28, 2008, the United Nations took their stance on the issue a bit further by issuing a postage stamp in observance of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. For the first time ever, the UN teamed up with the Israel Post Company as they too launched this postage stamp in a joint effort. The stamp was also issued in the United States, Geneva, and Vienna.
A special limited edition joint silk cover (seen above) was also issued to commemorate this event.
