On August 8, 2008, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued a set of six commemorative stamps on the theme “Sport for Peace." The stamp issue coincided with the Olympic Expo Beijing 2008 which was being held in Beijing, China from August 8 to August 18 in conjunction with the Games of the XXIX Olympics.

A unique printing process has been used for this stamp issue, which is a first ever for any postal administration. The total sheet area for the stamps is gold-foiled. Then a white offset coating is applied to the four-colour areas and then a four-colour process is printed over the white areas.

UNPA had commissioned the world-renowned South American artist Romero Britto to create six pieces of original artwork to design the stamps.

A modern day pop culture phenomenon, Romero Britto, has created contemporary masterpieces with his vibrant colors, bold patterns and a continuous message of hope.

Britto’s paintings and sculptures are currently exhibited in more than 100 galleries worldwide. His works are in the private collections’ of individuals such as Eileen Guggenheim, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, Prince Albert of Monaco and Michael Jordan. His corporate commissions have been numerous since the celebrated Absolut Vodka campaign that launched his career. Britto’s creative touch and infectious energy have been sought after by such brands like Evian, Pepsi, Audi, Nicole Miller, Technomarine, Microsoft and the NFL.
